gamescom: A Global and National Powerhouse in the Gaming World

Share

gamescom in Cologne is not only the largest event for video games in Europe but also one of the most significant trade fairs for the gaming industry worldwide. Every year in August, it attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the globe—among them not only passionate gamers but also industry experts, developers, and publishers. But what makes gamescom so special, and why does it play such a central role both internationally and for the German games industry?

What is gamescom?

Launched in 2009 as the successor to the Games Convention in Leipzig, gamescom has since established itself as a central meeting point for the global gaming industry. It provides a platform where developers can showcase their latest games and technologies, industry representatives can network, and fans can try out the newest games—often before they hit the market. The trade fair is divided into two main areas: the “Entertainment Area,” where the public can experience games up close, and the “Business Area,” which is reserved for professionals and serves as an important venue for business deals and industry contacts.

With around 320,000 visitors in 2023, gamescom has nearly returned to its pre-pandemic record levels and remains the largest event of its kind worldwide. The trend continues upward: this year, more than 1,400 exhibitors from over 60 countries are participating—a new record. This reflects the diversity and innovative spirit of the industry, showcasing how deeply interconnected video game culture is on a global scale.

The Significance of gamescom

Gamescom is much more than a national trade fair—it is an international flagship for the gaming industry. Leading companies from Asia, North America, and Europe converge here to set the latest trends. For many developers and publishers, gamescom is the most important venue to present their new products to a global audience. With extensive media coverage reaching far beyond Germany, gamescom connects with millions of gamers and interested parties worldwide, making it an indispensable event in the global calendar. In recent years, upjers has also repeatedly been on site in Cologne to present our new products and top games such as Zoo 2: Animal Park to the media and business partners.

For the German games industry, gamescom is of immense value. Germany, often referred to as the “Land of Poets and Thinkers,” has in recent years also become home to a growing and innovative gaming industry. Gamescom offers German developers and startups the opportunity to position themselves internationally and forge important connections. Small and medium-sized companies, in particular, benefit from the trade fair, as it provides them with a chance to present their projects to a broad audience and attract investors.

The German gaming industry has seen dynamic growth in recent years. With over 34 million gamers in Germany and revenue exceeding 9 billion euros in 2023, it plays a vital role in the national economy. Gamescom significantly contributes to promoting this sector further and increasing the visibility of German game developers on the international stage.

gamescom: Political Support for Games

The outstanding significance that gamescom has now achieved is evident not least through the presence of top politicians. Former Chancellor Angela Merkel has already been a guest at the Cologne exhibition halls. For the second time in a row, Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck opened the event this year.

Since 2019, there has been targeted federal funding for game development, which helps establish Germany as an attractive location for game developers. However, this support has recently stalled. Since 2023, there has been a halt in new applications, and no new funds are being disbursed, creating significant uncertainty in the industry. The new draft for funding from 2025, recently presented by Habeck, has also met with little enthusiasm and has been sharply criticized by the game association, the industry’s representative body.

Yet, support for games in Germany is strong. This is hardly surprising, given that, according to current market data from the game association, over 24 million people in Germany play games on platforms such as computers, consoles, tablets, and smartphones.

A YouGov online survey from July 2024 found that 69 percent of Germans believe that Germany should not fall further behind other countries in game development and related technologies. To ensure fair competition on the international stage, competitive games funding is essential in the long run.

gamescom: A Community Gathering Place

In addition to its international and economic significance, gamescom plays a central role for the gaming community itself. For visitors, the fair is far more than just an exhibition of new games and technologies—it is a place where the passion for gaming is celebrated and like-minded individuals come together.

The opportunity to try out the latest games before their release is a major incentive for many gamers to travel to Cologne. But gamescom offers much more: here, fans can meet their idols from the world of influencers and content creators. Whether YouTube stars, Twitch streamers, or esports professionals—gamescom is one of the few places where the digital world and real-life encounters merge. Autograph sessions, meet & greets, and exclusive live streams directly from the fair create unforgettable experiences.

Furthermore, gamescom is an important social meeting place. Many visitors travel in groups to experience their favorite games together and exchange ideas. The fair creates a unique atmosphere where the shared passion for games brings people together. Friendships are formed here, and existing communities grow even closer. The cliché of the lonely gamer is long gone. In Germany alone, over 16 million people have formed friendships through games, spanning all age groups.

Cosplay, a staple of gaming culture, is also a major highlight at gamescom. Numerous fans take the opportunity to showcase their intricately designed costumes and participate in competitions. The enthusiasm and creativity on display make gamescom a vibrant event that celebrates the diversity of gaming culture.

gamescom: Conclusion

Gamescom is far more than just a trade fair—it is a global and national powerhouse that significantly shapes the gaming industry. As the largest gaming event in the world, it has established itself as an indispensable platform and plays a central role in connecting the global gaming industry. At the same time, it is an important driving force for the German games industry, which benefits from both international attention and political support.

For visitors, gamescom is a highlight of the year, offering the chance to discover new games, meet influencers, and connect with like-minded individuals. Gamescom is a vibrant expression of gaming culture and a place where the community comes together to celebrate their passion. In a world where video games are increasingly gaining cultural and economic significance, gamescom remains a beacon that helps shape the future of the industry.
